I have now developed the first stage of our web bookings system, which is in use by 27 wards in one of the major public hospitals in Adelaide, and will be expanded to other hospitals when our new web infrastructure is available. The ward clerks and nurses like using it, and it means we don’t have our staff transcribing faxes into the system, saving us time and money and increasing efficiency – as soon as the hospital staff press “submit”, the booking is in our system. As a by-product, the hospital can see the status of all their bookings on a constantly updating screen, and organise their patients accordingly. The hospital emergency department also has an updating screen that shows emergency ambulances on their way in, so they can be prepared if there is a sudden influx of ambulances following a traffic accident etc. Parallel to this I have developed a updating dashboard screen for our communications centre tactician, which shows a snapshot of ambulance activity, with supporting screens enabling drilldown to see which ambulances are doing what, and which bookings are waiting for despatch etc. Graphing and on-screen reporting have been used for this, with some of the graphs taking as little as 10 minutes to create from time of user request to availability on screen. This demonstrates the ease of use that DesignBais brings to the Pick developer – everything is so easy and quick to do that it makes developing a web interface fun ! Subroutines use standard BASIC where needed, enabling complex business logic to support the front end. We keep on seeing more uses that DesignBais can be put to, and I hope to develop more systems to give users access to previously hidden information.
