Case Study

Quest Projects

When selecting a web development tool for creating a completely new web hosted application that had to be both powerful and flexible, only two products stood out from the crowd. The first was the UniVerse database, with its scalability, robustness and power. The second was the excellent DesignBais RAD tool.

DesignBais stood out from the competition due to the way it could re-create an in-house GUI based application experience that was also deployed across the internet using the industry standard Internet Explorer browser. Even development could be achieved using nothing more than IE6 and an internet connection.

Development of a feature rich set of applications such as those that form the QBIS product would take many man years using traditional browser based development environments such as PHP, ASP and .NET linking into ODBC based data sources and remote procedures. Using DesignBais on top of UniVerse, Quest has created a multi-ledger, multi-application and multi-function system in few man months.

From the ground up, QBIS has been designed with the ethos of object based inheritance and structure in place. A Company record is not a stand alone database item; it is an Entity Object which is linked to Location and People Objects. Accessing the Database is also done using a similar paradigm. Rather than directly reading, writing and selecting into UniVerse, QBIS uses a middle tier API for retrieving this information. And, as if to prove its worth, DesignBais fully supports this methodology “out of the box”.
