The rest of Patrick's quote reinforces points made in that article about potential incompatibilities between tools. RealtimeReference to Realtime Software Corporation Getting releasesWithout approval from management at these companies, I simply cannot mention names in public. For whatever reason we were not able to get requests through some management channels and approved in time for this article. However, if you would like to speak with someone about the projects mentioned here, we may be able to make that happen. Thank you for bearing with this situation. cURLInformation about cURL is available at SourceForge Nebula R&D has a lot of experience working with cURL and other interfaces from MV to the web, and we'll be happy to work with you to implement connectivity like this with your business applications. FlashCONNECTRaining Data announced that the FlashCONNECT v4.0 "Provides SOAP-enabled applications the ability to execute FlashCONNECT business rules". I've seen this in action and FC4 truly does make it easy to create a SOAP client into D3 or mvBASE from .NET languages, Java, or other languages that support SOAP. (Now where was this when I was writing all of my own code from scratch? : ) KelvinNamed after a quote by Sir William Thomson, also known as Lord Kelvin or Baron Kelvin of Largs: "When you measure what you are speaking about and express it in numbers, you know something about it, but when you cannot express it in numbers your knowledge about is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind." anesthetistMy apologies to those who speak English and not American, I confess I modified the spelling of this word from "anaesthetist" which Steve provided, as well as other words that my fellow Americans might not recognize. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)This is a buzzword: SOA is implemented with Web Services, so SOA and WS are virtually synonymous. Microsoft MapPointhttp://www.microsoft.com/mappoint/webservice/default.mspx A case study on Microsoft's first full Web service shows that effective
delivery of Web services requires at least as much effort in operational
deployment and commercial strategy as it does in technical specification
and development. Salesforce.comSalesforce.com integration with Intuit QuickBooks and Microsoft Business
Solutions-Great Plains accounting software I encourage all MV VARs to take this example to heart of a software application that was extended incrementally with Web Services. Once the WS interface was created, interfaces to other applications became possible. That expanded opportunities for third-party integrators and increased the value-add of the original offering. If you have any interest in selling more software, consider following the example of Salesforce.com and making your business rules and reports available to other "mainstream" applications, rather than trying to sell the application as a stand-alone package. Please feel free to contact me to discuss opportunities for this sort of project.
